Meet Sage
Do you have a soft spot for the underdog? Are you a sucker for a story of personal growth and learning to trust against all odds? Do you want to be a part of that story? If you said yes, Sage could be the perfect cat for you.
Sage has come so far over her foster journey. SCAT found her and her kittens on the street when she was just a kitten herself, less than a year old. She had likely been birthed by a street mom and was continuing that cycle, understandably terrified of humans. When I first met her, she would hiss and hide when approached, terrified to even make eye contact. Slowly (and with many meat tubes), Sage began to see that I was not a threat. She was still extremely hand-shy for months, only letting me approach if there was food in my fingers. Eventually I managed to give her her first scritch (against her will), and she was shocked realized that being petted is actually PRETTY COOL.
Now, when I go into her room and she wants attention, she will bolt to the top of her cat tree and meow until she gets the chin rubs, scritches, and butt pats she so richly deserves. Sage has also come to enjoy belly rubs, which she will use her paws to pull your hand in for. In her enthusiasm, Sage has trouble realizing human hands are not the same as her kitty best friend, and you cannot wrestle with them in the same way, but she responds well to reminders to be polite/pulling the hand away until she calms down.
While Sage has learned the joys of human interaction, she only wants it on her OWN terms in her chosen safe space (the top of the cat tree or other perch that gets her closer to eye level). She still does not like getting pet when she is on the ground (humans are TOO TALL and VERY SCARY). We are working on being able to be picked up. She hates it, but no longer goes into attack mode--I can now pick her up from her cat tree and then immediately put her back down and she will let me resume petting her instead of running away.
If you are a kind, patient soul who is willing to work with Sage to show her that she is finally safe, she will reward you with her hard-won trust. Taking a chance on a timid is daunting, but if you are patient, that first belly rub may even bring a tear to your eye.
Sage needs people who are very patient as she adjusts to her environment. She LOVES snuggling and playing with gentle, non-intimidating cats, but is very easily scared by dogs/strangers/"alpha" cats. To best help Sage shine, you will need to have her somewhere that she is able to hide but also needs to interact with you a bit (like a small room or large kennel/catio) so that she can see you are providing her with food and other nice things.
