Meet Midnight
Midnight is looking for a home with one or more cat-savvy people who can respect her boundaries but also help her to expand them. She would enjoy a home with another friendly cat or two, but she is hand-shy and is afraid of fast movements, so she would do best in a home without young children. Once she has bonded, she wants to be near her people much of the time, and regular play sessions with a wand toy are probably the key to her heart. She has soft, plush fur with black tips and white roots, and she does enjoy being petted if you can convince her to let you try. But beware: she has strict rules about where and when petting is appropriate, and she is willing to enforce those rules with the Swattin’ Paw. We are working on behaviour modification here, and it must be said that the Swattin’ Paw has significantly decreased in frequency since we started leaving the room whenever she brings it out.
Midnight came into SCAT’s care as a pregnant stray, and she birthed and raised five healthy kittens. Now she is retired and living a life of leisure. Your idea of leisure might be a bit different from Midnight’s, so let me explain:
• Playtime: independent and interactive, multiple times a day, lots of it.
• Naptime: in between bouts of playtime, small siestas are important. Changing locations throughout the day ensures even fur distribution through the home. A cozy covered “hut,” a cat tree with a good sleeping spot, and a fluffy blanket are favourite snooze zones, but a comfy place near a trusted human will get priority.
• Tell people about your day time: impromptu, should occur multiple times each day. Talk to people with many adorable, squeaking meows and little trills. Get them to talk back and tell you how pretty you are.
• Mealtime: mmm, food! Graze at the food regularly and try to convince the humans that over-grazing will not happen (but definitely eat more if given the opportunity!). Insist upon a nightly game of tissue-paper-puzzles, in which tasty treats are hidden inside crumpled-up tissue paper. Kibbles hidden in this way instead of treats are sadly disappointing: be sure to show appropriate disdain if this travesty occurs.
• Pettin’ time: rejecting human attempts to make contact keeps them humble and is important for their personal growth. Allow petting only at certain times, and only in designated pettin’ chairs. Roll around flirtatiously nearby, but be prepared to run or swat if those fingers make an unsanctioned move!
• Bedtime: routines are important. Help the humans get to bed by escorting them to the correct rooms. Snuggle with a trusted human, but keep them guessing and don’t spend the night every time.
NOTE: Midnight is "handsy" and would rather swat than run if she doesn't like something about the way she is being touched or if she decides she doesn't want to be touched anymore. She needs a home with people who are willing to work with her on this behaviour and who are able to "read" her body language for signs that her energy is heightened.
