Meet Hunnter
Hunnter came into SCAT’s care beat up and injured after having been a stray for at least 1.5 years. He is an excellent shepherd of humans, preferring that everyone in the home be in approximately the same location so he can monitor properly, and he has turned into quite a lap cat! He does not understand that humans possess something called “personal space,” but he is quite insistent that his own space be respected: he will happily snuggle all evening and all night long, but he does get nippy if people pet him more than he wants. He is quite social and will come out and visit with even large groups of people as long as folks sit down, and he is very well behaved at the vet.
Hunnter is moderately active and enjoys multiple play sessions daily. His favourite interactive toys are wand toys with furry attachments like mice. He loves strings and balls (especially if they make noise). He is a huge catnip fan, and he has become very good at scratching on his scratching posts, especially if they are occasionally “seasoned” with some of the ‘nip.
Hunnter has food sensitivities that make him itchy, which makes him scratch and pluck his fur, so he needs to eat a specific food. He was also diagnosed with fatty liver in spring 2026, but he has recovered wonderfully. Luckily, Hunnter enjoys his kibble, and he has no problems taking it with water to make sure he gets good fluid intake. It is important that he eat only his own food and not get any other foods that might be left unattended. Because of this, and because he nips when he’s overstimulated or done with petting, he would do best in a home without young children. (Hunnter does not beg for food at the dinner table, and he is not a counter surfer, but he views snacks on the couch as fair game.)
Hunnter is a fun and quirky companion. Here are a few of his “special somethings.”
• He likes to play with doors and may accidentally lock himself in a room if a door is left partway open and not all the way open or shut.
• He likes his nose and head stroked but is not as big on having his ears scratched, maybe because they used to be so itchy and people kept messing with them. Do not attempt the belly: it is off limits!
• He enjoys being under blankets – in bed sometimes, but also just in general – and he likes a gap left so he can observe the world and get some fresh air in there.
