Meet Neelix

Neelix is a girl with a tortitude! In her defence, she likely has not had a lot of exposure to humans and it’s been a lot of new experiences for this gorgeous lady since living the indoor life.

Like many timid and feral cats, Neelix requires a slow and patient socialization process that her foster mom has been carefully working on. Upon arriving at her foster home, Neelix had full access to the room she was in, but her foster mom quickly realized this was too much too soon for a spicy girl.

Neelix moved to a smaller enclosure while her foster mom worked on exposing her to humans and helping her learn that humans are not scary and they bring food and treats. Neelix is excited to announce, she has ditched the cage and now explores all the rooms of the house.

Neelix has made leaps of progress in her foster home. From hiding in a corner to swatting, spitting, and growling with every movement, she is now consistently taking treats from her foster human’s hands, she doesn’t grumble nearly as often and she even leans in for pets (on her terms of course).

It may take weeks or months longer for Neelix to trust humans fully, but she is slowly learning certain routines around feeding time and the human that offers the food. She still spooks easily around humans but will play and enjoy herself if you sit quietly and observe. Neelix is showing more of her personality every week. She will play with wand toys which has been great to reinforce positive human interaction.

Neelix is quite fond of the resident cats in her home. She enjoys their company and has never hissed or growled at them when they approach her. She even had a kitten visitor for a weekend and instantly accepted her new friend. She needs a home with another cat who will befriend her.

Neelix is also missing a back foot; a mystery we will never know the answer to. She may have been born this way, or it may be one of the harsh realities of her life outdoors. Either way, she gets around just fine on three paws.
