Xina is a sweet but anxious lady looking for a very special and understanding home. She came to SCAT in April 2020 with a litter of newborn kittens after being spotted in a community cat shelter. The vets estimated she was about 5 years old when she came in making her roughly 6 years old now. She did an excellent job mothering and raising her babies who were all adopted before moving to a feral foster home in July 2020 because she had a lot of fear in her and we knew she would need some time to settle in.
We don’t believe that Xina has ever been owned in a traditional “pet” sense, the area she was trapped in has many roaming community cats who have no formal owners. Since coming into her feral foster home it has become very clear that she was sensitive and fearful- the first few weeks she lived mainly in a “blanket fort” so the humans couldn’t see her but has made great progress in relaxing enough to share space with people in a relaxed state. She ok laying down/napping/eating with people in the room, she’s even walked about a few times though generally she is a very sleepy girl prefers to stay in “her spots” while people are around.
Xina also seems to have a fear of human hands, the idea of human touch is very scary for this little love, who when she feels cornered will lash out to protect herself (though she prefers to run away if possible). At present if someone was to adopt Xina they would have to accept that she is not currently accepting pets/easy to handle and may never be comfortable with human touch but there is hope that if she was able to find a home with a patient owner(s) and ideally a nice calm, friendly but not overbearing resident cat (Xina is extremely submissive so would have to be a cat that wouldn’t chase her) that she would learn to become more of a companion to people.
The long and short of it is that Xina has not had an easy life, her ear tips are frozen off (just the tips likely thanks to the community members with shelters set up in the area), she has had an unknown number of litters of kittens, she has a deep-rooted fear of human contact (whether due to a lack of familiarity or a negative interaction we are unsure), and yet there are these wonderful glimmers. She is slowly learning to play with toys, she loves to roll on her back with her paws in the air atop her cat tree, when she’s being brave, she lets herself get all excited about catnip, she loves watching cat TV or a particularly engaging TV show (she had a thing for Criminal Minds for a while), she has tried to play feather wand a few times but gets a bit overwhelmed and then realizes she’s forgetting to be scared and runs away. If you have a patient heart and a friendly feline to help show her how awesome the pet life can be, Xina would love to be added to your home so she can learn the ropes!
Note we are anticipating that it will take Xina several months to settle in and relax in a new home, so we are looking for an exceedingly rare adopter who is ok with a long transition period. We have had these “miracle adopters” come forward in the past and hope that there may be one out there for Xina too! In the meantime, we will keep working on trying to cross that “touch barrier” and getting more comfortable with the whole “living inside as a pet” idea.
